Helloo.

I am terribly sorry for the lack of real updates. I have no excuse.

I started working at this little boutique. It’s pretty awesome, we sell lines like Save the Queen, marc cain, marc aurel, Iris, suzi roher belts, Escada (apriori), and sarah pacini. Its all really cute stuff, but a lot of it is just not my style. There is a huge lack of flower print in the store! It’s depressing.I’m excited to see what comes in for Autumn/Winter ’10, though, especially from Iris (out of Montreal, check them out!)

Teen Vogue

Its been about two years since I properly referred to myself as being a “teen”, however, I still find myself reading (and enjoying) Teen Vogue. By ‘reading’ I mainly mean ‘looking’, of course. It is rare that I find something worthwhile to read in any magazine, everything seems so recycled.

In any case, I find that their editorials and cover shoots are always fresh, relevant and exciting!

This is my fave! The boots are amazing with the flower print open bottom tulip skirt, and the colour of that blouse is to die for.

Colour me inspired! Tomorrow I will photograph the inspired outfit. :)

Hi all!

I’ve been feeling very inspired, apparently. Today I felt a little reminiscent of Rosie the Riveter with the head scarf. Later my mom told me I reminded her of a French Apache dancer. I guess maybe a little with the red stripes and the scarf, but I threw on jeans because I knew I would be spending the day cleaning and riding around on my bike doing errands. I’m so happy it’s warm enough to bike ride again, and especially happy that I have a bike in working order for the summer. Her name is Bertha and she was broken for much of last summer.

A few days ago I was feeling very much inspired by Annie Hall – but she is one of my regular inspirations. The hat pictured below is my grandmothers, I ‘borrowed’ it from her, it’s a little silly – but I love it all the same. I ‘borrow’ a lot of my grandmothers things.

I picked up these lace up loafer heels the other day at Valoo Village sur Rue Roger. I love them, I had been looking for shoes like this for quite some time!

Three Generations of Dresses

The other day my friend and I went to a cute little children’s clothing shop. She needed to get a gift for a shower she was attending, but looking at all the clothes reminded me of some pictures I had on my computer at home. My mom has recently taken to scanning old family photos. I have been looking through them and I can’t help but notice the gorgeous details in all of the clothes once worn by the members of my family over the years, especially as little kids. How I wish some of these pieces were still kicking around! I thought I would show you guys a little bit of what I mean.

My grandmother is on the far right in this picture. I just absolutely adore her dress! I imagine it as being a light weight cotton. Oh, and with the little pockets – so cute! She looks like such the odd one out in this shot, so very typical. This was probably taken in the mid 1920′s.
The coat my aunt is modeling in this shot is beyond words. If only I could find a similar one, in my size of course!

My mom in a sweet little polka dot dress. Taken late 1950′s/early 1960′s.
Finally, it’s me sitting on my great uncles lap wearing a little blue and white dress. I find it amusing that athough this picture is the youngest in this bunch it is the only one with a rip. Taken in 1989!

I left out the boys in this one but not because they didn’t look great throughout the years as well! Maybe I’ll do a post with them soon.

Short Cuts

Words like “fashionable” or “stylish” have always perplexed me in a particular way, namely in the way that most adjectives never satisfy me when used by another person to describe something. I know what “stylish” means for me, but I am also certain it does not mean the same for many others. So then, where in the word stylish exists a description of something that can be understood “objectively.”

For example, I think that to have style is to look and feel comfortable with yourself in your clothes, and to understand how colours, weights and cuts work together and work for you. What is more than all that though, and on top of it, I think style is about maintaining a look that is consistent with yourself (your moods, feelings, interests etc.) Not that your style can’t change, but it is somehow always uniquely you. Like when your friend is able to look at a piece of clothing and understand it as being “so you!” It’s also like how good directors have their own style and that style changes, but you can always tell when a movie is their work. I’m thinking of directors like Tim Burton, David Lynch, Robert Altman etc. There’s just something extra there, something you can’t put your finger on right away, because it is never super obvious. That is what I think style is.
Of course though, several people will make good arguments against this description of the word style. In that way, there is nothing in the word style or stylish that gives it “objective” meaning to anyone, it’s all up to the perceiver to make her interpretations. Anyway, that’s the way I see it.

This is one of my favourite little dresses. Its easy to dress up or down. Its a sweater material but it has short sleeves so its okay for all kinds of weather, the collar is very versatile in that it can be made big or small and it’s great for layering!

it’s okay if you don’t know everything…

Right now I’m reading a book called Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins. I’m only about 60 pages in but one major theme seems to be the transition from a group mentality to individuality. He writes this as if it was something that happened in history, but this book is by no means non-fiction or even anything close to historical fiction. It’s just an idea, albeit an accepted idea, that in the past the idea of individuality did not exist in the same way we know it now. I struggle with this, precisely because my separateness from others seems so intuitive.

As far as I know arithmetic has always existed in the same way, in that 1 and 1 equals 2 and 2 and 2 equals 4. You would have to seriously screw me up to make me believe that 2 and 2 equals 5. Like maybe, for example, strap me to a seat, shock me for days or years, and threaten to have rats eat my head. Something like that. It seems like this knowledge comes a priori, in that, as soon as you become sentient and aware of your own existence you also become aware of that existence as separate from another’s without having to do any work. You are 1 person, another person is 1 person, and together you are 2. You may not have the language or theory to make it that explicit – but at some level it is understood. Otherwise, interactions, labels, roles, relationships would not exist if we never had any idea of being separate from one another.

Anyway, in the beginning of this blog I said that I wanted to find out why I loved clothes, and dressing myself so much. I take it as a given that it has something to do with my individuality, and how I experience myself in relation to others. There is more to it than that though, because if I am aware o my separateness from others from the time I become sentient than why do I eel the need to define this separateness further? Probably because individuality does not just mean being your own physical person, it means being your own individual mind with thoughts and capabilities that can stand on their own yet come from within. Clothing is a way of expressing your insides.

If I know anything though, I know that the idea of innate uniqueness is bullshit. The idea that you were born a unique and special individual is absurd precisely because all you are is everything you have experienced. By that logic then, I like clothes because on some level the reflect my experiences? In an important way this seems true, yet I feel there is more to be said about it.

I don’t know which experience or experiences this outfit reflects…but then, that is not what I meant at all…

Allo all,

I assure you that tomorrow I will get will get back on the bloggin’ horse. Mainly I would like to start photographing my outfits on a more regular basis. My f and w keys are still not working so that is kind of a pain in the ass but I am dealing and plan on getting that all worked out and fixed in the near future.

I have been really looking forward to warmer weather and lighter clothing though, they are calling for a high of 26 degrees celsius tomorrow so I’m thinking I can go through most of the day tomorrow without a long sleeve shirt! Amazing.

Since school has ended I have just been reading, playing video games, enjoying the warmer weather and sadly watching the season finales of some of my favourite shows like Lost, and Fringe to name a few of my current favourites. I have also taken a liking to a show that Dale introduced me to, Joss Whedon’s Firefly. The wardrobe and costume design on that show is pretty perfect, it really provides a basis for which the whole wild west theme the show sits on even though it takes place in what seems to be the future, in space.

Particularly I enjoy Inara and Simon (the two characters in the upper right hand corner) as they seem to be the only two whose outfits change every episode where everyone else seems to have a uniform of sorts save for River. It makes perfect sense for it to be that way, to understand though, you must watch the show! It comes highly recommended by yours truly.

Hello!

So I have been entirely neglecting my blog and also my daily outfit photographing. The former is largely due to the fact that I the ‘w’ and ‘f’ are not functioning on my keyboard. Making it a pain in the ass to type any sort of lengthy text . The latter because I have been lazy, not with my outfits, just with photographing them. Also, I just finished school so the last few weeks have been just a little nuts. Anywhooo, I thought I might give you guys a little peek into whats been on my mind as of late.

9. Scott Pilgrim! These graphic novels are pretty darn cute. Admittedly, Iwasn’t fully enjoying them until the third volume but now I have to get my hands on the fourth!

Oooh there’s so much more I could have added! It is for next time, maybe when my keyboard is fixed!

So I guess it is basically the case that I suck. I’ve been busy with fun things like essays and bulletin boards!

I want to show you something though. It is my favourite new skirt. A few months ago I bought it at a value village with a friend (Hi Persia!) It was quite long before I hemmed it and in it’s length made my entire lower half look a bit like a couch. I could tell by Persia’s face when I tried it on that she didn’t entirely approve. I could not say why, but for some reason I bought it anyway, hemmed it a few months later – et voila! Pretty happy about it.

Hello my fine-feathered friends!

I kept my outfit simple today and let me tell you, I am glad that I did! I spent most of the day on my knees adding fabric to 4′x6′ bulletin boards. They look great, though, so that’s good!

Last night I had pasta for dinner at a friends. Penne is my favourite type of pasta to use, and eat. On top of that, I think it is the prettiest looking!

I am pretty certain that I saw Hawksley Workman on the subway today, though I could be completely wrong. Anyway, you really ought to check him out. He released a new album this year (Los Manlicious) I have yet to give it a good listen, but the name is pretty great in itself. My favourite album of his is (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves. In my opinion, it is decidedly the best one.
